Last weekend one of <a style="color:purple;" href="http://www.venuemonk.com" rel="noopener">our monks</a> went to his college friend's "New Job" party at a pub in Cyber Hub, Gurgaon. At the end of the party, the final most-not-awaited dish arrived - "The Bill" with service charge amounting to INR 400! His friend paid the bill and later on seeing the bill, our monk asked his friend, "Do you know that service charge is no more mandatory?". His friend was totally unaware of this new rule passed by the government!

His friend then choose not to pay the service charge and all he had to do was - Ask! Ask for a new bill without the service charge. He was swiftly given a new bill and was returned the ~INR 400 service charge he had already paid.

Consumers have the “discretion to pay the service charge or not”, the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) said early this year, adding that the billing of service charge by restaurants in addition to taxes is optional.

This was implemented after the DCA received numerous complaints from consumers that they been charged 'service charge' in the range of 5-20%, and were forced to pay irrespective of the kind of service provided to them.

DCA has also asked Hotels and restaurants to disseminate information through a display system that the ‘service charges’ are discretionary or voluntary and a consumer can have them waived.

Maybe the GST buzz was so loud that such small but important information wasn't passed on to all.

So next time you plan an event at a venue or dine out, you will be at liberty to not pay the service charge if you are not happy with the service or you just decide not to pay!

It’s party time! And, party means drinks. We bet, you didn’t know anything about the legends of your favourite cocktails. So, <a style="color:purple;" href="http://venuemonk.com/">VenueMonk</a> discloses this. Have a look:

1. Pina Colada

The piña colada is a sweet cocktail made with rum, coconut cream or coconut milk, and pineapple juice, usually served either blended or shaken with ice. It may be garnished with either a pineapple wedge, a maraschino cherry, or both. It was more than anything a mark of success for a businessman named Don Ramon Lopez whose company sold Coco Lopez, a permade cream of coconut. And, it was further given in the hands of bartenders which created a delicious history.

2. Cosmopolitan

Vodka plus cranberry juice along with a touch of lime juice to it, cosmopolitan is one of a drink. Considered to be feminine, the legends say that the drink was created by the gay community in Massacheutts in the 1970s. Variations today, continue to take place with gin instead of vodka, the drink is considered to be ironic and has achieved a very high status.

3. Zombie

The name says it all. The drink was originally invented by a man called Don the Beachcomber and he was popular enough so he kept his recipe a secret and shared just bits of it to any bartender. Hence, experiments have been done and now it usually includes rum and some kind of fruit juice. So, basically you believe yourself to be a zombie before you drink ‘the Zombie’.

4. Mojito

The famous cocktail was born in Cuba, is rum based and is popular with sailors. The drink uses mint leaves which leave their flavour first and then lime juice is added along with sugar and soda water. It is a popular drink to fight off scurvy and hence became common amongst the soldiers.

5. The Manhattan

It is basically a Martini for all those who like whiskey over vodka. It consists of vodka or gin, vermouth and is served with an olive. According to the legends, its birth dates back to New York to the time when Winston Churchill’s mother was pregnant with the future personality that everyone admires.

6. Harvey Wallbanger

This drink was dates back to the 50s and its history is very interesting. A dude named Harvey dropped almost every day into the bars. He apparently liked to add Galliano to his screwdriver and then would stumble and smash into things inside the bar. And, therefore the drink came to be known as the Harvey Wallbanger. The cocktail is a combination of vodka and orange juice with Galliano, a yellow liquor added to the mix.

7. Gin and Tonic

Diwali begins in Konkan and Goa on the day of Naraka Chaturdashi. On the eve of Naraka Charurdashi, paper-made effigies of Narakasura, filled with grass and firecrackers symbolizing evil are made and are burnt at around four o'clock in the morning. Firecrackers are burst and people return home to take a scented oil bath after which the women perform aarti of the men, gifts are exchanged, a bitter berry called kareet is crushed under the feet in token of killing Narkasur, symbolising evil and removal of ignorance.

Naraka Chaturdashi: On this day people get up early in the morning and take their bath before sunrise while stars are still visible.
